About Ken:
Ken has the “gift of gab.” Charming and fun, he has never met a stranger. The flooring industry is a perfect fit, combining his natural talent for arithmetic, taste for luxury design, and extroverted personality.
Over 40 years ago, on my first day on the job, my sales manager gave me a pad of graph paper and told me to go out, buy a tape measure and find 6 houses to measure. Once complete, take the rest of the day off. The next morning, I brought in my measurements. My manager taught me to figure the first one and told me to spend the remainder of the day drawing diagrams and figuring measurements and carpet cut sizes for the rest. In under an hour, I brought them into his office. He reviewed them, looked up at me, “fast learner! You’re going to do alright.”
What is the most rewarding part of the job?
The reward is in making customers feel good about their investments.
Back when hurricane Ike hit, I was referred to a customer remodeling a funeral home in Galveston after extensive and devastating damages. The job was about $38k worth of carpet and another $38k worth of laminate flooring. I spent a lot of time with these people (Ken still recalled her name). On the last day of installation, as I sat with her while our customer as she wrote us the check for the balance due, she began to tear up. She said to me, “What you have done for us means so much more to me than I imagined.” The project turned out beautifully. Moments like this get me.
Money is no object, what floors do you put in your house?
Atelier hardwood by Duchateau. That is a hardwood floor that makes an impression. It would get the attention of anyone that walked into your home. Everything is done by hand with Atelier. Hand sanded, and hand stained, and the finish is hand rubbed. This creates a look that you cannot find in machine made products.
