About Bill:
My first job out of the US Military was in the flooring industry. At an Angels Baseball game, my neighbor asked me to take an interview at the company he worked for as a personal favor to get in good with his boss for bringing in fresh talent.
What was supposed to be an hour-long interview turned into an afternoon, and at the end of a 5.5-month training program, I was a sales rep for Evans and Black Carpet Mill – a now defunct division of Armstrong Flooring. It was there that my technical training in flooring began.
I started working for Roberts Carpet & Fine Floors in 1986, two years after conception. I quickly realized I preferred the technical side over retail (assisting with design and colors are not my forte) and went back to working with a carpet mill. But in 2000, when Sam Roberts called me up personally and offered me a job I could not resist. It was not long before I was managing a new division of Roberts Carpet – To the Trade – where the technical aspects of flooring were what mattered most to our customer base.
What is your favorite part of the job?
If you want straight information, technical knowledge, that is what I am good at it. I understand the technology of carpet and why something will work. If you can tell me what you don’t like about your previous floors, I can tell you what will take care of that problem. I am a technical salesman.
Money is no object. What floors do you put in your home?
I have 4 large dogs so I wanted something that 4 large dogs could live on. Laminate floors – they have the hardest finish and easiest care routine.
If I didn’t have animals, it would be carpet. It is quiet and soft. As for which carpet – that would be up to my wife!
