Rug Styling for Small Spaces
Just because you have a smaller home, or small spaces within your home, that does not mean that you can’t maximize your style. In fact, small spaces are perfect for creating a vibe that is unique to you! Here are some of our favorite ideas for how you can use area rugs to style your small spaces.
Use Rugs to Designate Areas
Area rugs are commonly used to designate areas, or to show where one space ends and another begins. For example, you might have an area rug under your coffee table that runs between the couch and some side chairs, creating a spot for conversation. Or, you might place another in your dining room, to anchor the table and chairs, or set the area apart within a larger room.

Choosing an area rug that is woven from jute or sisal brings a homey, natural feel to your space, and can create a nice contrast if you accessorize with sleeker accent pieces. Natural materials tend to be neutral in color, so they can mesh nicely with a variety of styles and decors.
Area Rugs with Bold Patterns & Colors
Small spaces can lend themselves nicely to making bold statements, for a few different reasons. Eye-catching patterns or vibrant colors on a smaller scale offer a bold pop of color, rather than overwhelming an area with giant, wall-to-wall flowers or jungle print, for example.
Area rugs for smaller spaces are affordable and simple to swap out seasonally, or if a color or pattern should eventually not catch your eye anymore. If a rug is in an enclosed area, such as a bathroom or bedroom, it can stand alone and doesn’t have to compete with the decor in the rest of the house. So go with that jungle theme, if it suits you!

When styling your small spaces, consider choosing rugs that bring a lot of different texture to the areas. Area rugs can be found in fluffy, shag, simple, rustic, chic, and everything in between. Keep in mind how you will use the space, how you would like it to look, and also feel underfoot. Never feel limited by rules when you orient your rug within your space. Feel free to rotate it, or place it on an angle, to mix things up a bit.

Finally, don’t limit yourself to one rug! It’s perfectly acceptable to layer them and add visual interest to a space. Whether you are laying one area rug over another or over wall-to-wall carpeting, having two rugs of different sizes, where one frames the other, is definitely trending.
